A faction of eight judges recently installed by the government has conducted an initial meeting to assert authority over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal. During this session, the group initiated disciplinary measures against Chief Justice Bogdan Święczkowski. This development has triggered significant legal and political friction, as Święczkowski and other officials aligned with the opposition refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of these judges. Critics have characterized the takeover as an illegal seizure of power, or a coup d'état. Furthermore, questions have been raised regarding the formal validity of the assembly itself, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the current governance of the judicial body. The situation remains volatile as conflicting factions within the institution continue to dispute the legality of the recent leadership transition.
