Based on a 2006 short story by Ursula Wills, the film The Wicker Husband blends elements of macabre horror with sentimental storytelling. Set in a fictionalized medieval village characterized by oppressive patriarchal customs, such as the forced use of metal collars for brides, the narrative follows a lonely, mistreated fisherwoman. Her life takes an unexpected turn when a basketmaker, portrayed by Peter Dinklage, provides her with a companion crafted from wicker, played by Alexander Skarsgård. The production occupies a distinctive space between unsettling folk-horror and romantic drama, evoking the atmospheric tension often associated with the works of Shirley Jackson. While the film maintains a peculiar tone that defies simple categorization, it offers a compelling exploration of isolation and fantasy within a rustic, folkloric setting.
