Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs is heading into a challenging electoral contest this Saturday. Despite leading in current opinion polls, the incumbent leader faces potential difficulties in forming a stable government. The political landscape is heavily influenced by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and tensions with Russia. There is a significant risk that some of Kulbergs' current coalition partners may fail to secure the five percent of the vote required to enter parliament. Should these centrist allies lose their seats, the Prime Minister might be forced to negotiate with right-wing figures, such as Ainārs Šlesers, who has previously expressed opposition to trade restrictions against Russia. Kulbergs, who assumed office in May following the resignation of Evika Siliņa, has publicly downplayed the possibility of such an alliance, maintaining his commitment to keeping Latvia firmly aligned with European Union policies.
