German opposition leader Friedrich Merz reached the Ukrainian capital on Sunday for a surprise visit focused on bolstering support against the ongoing Russian invasion. During his meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the discussions are set to prioritize the provision of long-range weaponry and enhanced air defense systems. The visit occurs as Ukraine braces for a particularly difficult winter, with persistent Russian strikes targeting energy infrastructure and heating facilities. Furthermore, Kyiv has reported a significant shortfall in defense financing, estimated at 24 billion euros. While the European Union has moved to expedite a 45 billion euro aid package, the visit also highlights underlying friction regarding the timeline for Ukraine's potential European Union accession. Merz aims to reinforce Germany's commitment to the country's security amid these escalating military and economic pressures.
