The recent European Council summit concluded with minimal advancements on several critical policy matters. Discussions among EU heads of state remained deadlocked regarding the bloc's multi-year financial framework, while energy security and the management of strategic gas reserves dominated the agenda. Furthermore, the potential reform of the Emissions Trading System remains a point of contention. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to influence high-level deliberations. Tensions were exacerbated by reports of a U.S. decision to facilitate the entry of Russian diesel into the American market, a move intended to reduce domestic fuel prices but which has caused significant concern among European officials and Ukrainian leadership. Journalists from Politico analyzed these developments, noting the lack of tangible progress as the summit proceedings extended late into the night.
