Jonathan Freedland argues that Donald Trump is signaling a clear alignment with Vladimir Putin rather than acting as a neutral mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war. The author contends that despite Trump's explicit rhetoric, Western nations, including the United Kingdom, remain hesitant to fully acknowledge his shift away from traditional democratic alliances. The piece suggests that Trump’s behavior indicates he no longer views himself as a leader of the democratic West, but rather as a partner to its adversaries. Consequently, the article posits that the current geopolitical climate has become increasingly precarious, necessitating that European nations prioritize their own defense spending and strategic autonomy to navigate this new era of uncertainty and perceived betrayal by the former American administration.
